The Exported Wave, 2024

7.1  quadraphonic and vertical sound installation, 7´loop.
"The Exported Wave" is a 7.1 quadraphonic and vertical sound installation that restores the soundscape of Praia do Norte, a wild coastal environment increasingly vulnerable due to its global exposure. This installation underscores the significance of listening and field recordings in identifying environmental concerns, highlighting the role of sound art within Acoustic Ecology. It examines the profound relationship between the sublime, as conceptualized by Edmund Burke, and the contemporary interpretation proposed by Barnett Newman, encouraging participants to engage deeply with Acoustic Ecology practices. By doing so, it raises awareness of the environmental and cultural impact of Praia do Norte's soundscape.

This sound art project aims to transport the geolocalized experience of Praia do Norte's waves to diverse audiences. By sharing and disseminating this natural phenomenon's acoustic and sensory attributes in varied contexts, the project fosters a greater appreciation for the soundscape. The installation not only serves as a sound restoration process but also re-establishes the emotional value of the wave in its new form.

The 7.1 quadraphonic and vertical sound installation, "The Exported Wave," restores the soundscape of Praia do Norte, in Nazaré (Portugal) a wild coastal environment now vulnerable due to its increasing global exposure. This work underlines the importance of listening and of field recordings in identifying environmental concerns, highlighting the role of sound art in Acoustic Ecology. By exploring the profound relationship between the sublime, as conceptualized by Edmund Burke, and the contemporary interpretation proposed by Barnett Newman, the project encourages participants to engage deeply with Acoustic Ecology practices, raising awareness of the environmental and cultural impact of this soundscape.

Embodying the duality of water as both a destructive and life-giving force, the installation highlights how these forces continually reshape landscapes and perceptions. The vulnerability of natural environments to human impact is evident, and it is through field recordings and sound composition that this project raises awareness of the environmental and cultural importance of this soundscape, exploring the invisible streams that influence our daily lives by opening up the discussion to sustainability and environmental conservation. The installation seeks to evoke a deep feeling and emotional response from the public, reflecting the Sublime in nature through the sea waves. Transporting the colossal sound of Praia do Norte to a new public space calls on viewers to experience the raw power and emotional impact of this natural phenomena.

This project offers an in-depth exploration of the contrasting forces of water systems and their transformative implications. By integrating technology, storytelling and environmental concerns, "The Exported Wave" aligns with the thematic focus and objectives of the exhibition, presenting an immersive sound installation that is in tune with the physical and metaphorical currents that shape our world. By bringing the sound of Praia do Norte into a gallery, the project not only preserves and restores the integrity of this original sound environment, but also fosters a deeper appreciation of the complexities of Acoustic Ecology and the human impact on oceans and coastal zones.
